Lorenciro Cam~on Mint -Veneration Technical ReDOrt
• Shrub density for this study area was calculated to be 97.14 woody stems per hectare. Winterfat
and natrowleaf cottonwood seedlings dominated the woody stem count. Production in the surface
mine study area totaled 175.13 pounds per acre.
•

Oak/Pinyon Pine Disturbed Area
Oak/pinyon pine communities were encountered within the proposed surface mine area, the Rl/R2
portals, Portal P1, and the R3/R4 portals. Dominant perennial grasses included narrow-leaved
sedge (Carex stenoph~~lla), big bluestem, and blue grama at 2.2, 2.4, and 2.1 percent,
respectively. The common perennial forb was cudweed sagewort. Sleepy catchfly was the
dominant annual forb. Gambel oak accounted for 12.2 percent of the vegetative cover within the
oak/pinyon community. Litter was high, comprising 42.4 percent of the cover in any one transect.
Rock and bare ground were low. These study areas met the 90 percent confidence parameter for
cover when compared to the reference area. Thus, the null hypothesis was accepted. Table V-7
summarizes the oak/pinyon raw quantitative data from Tables V-8 to V-11.
TABLE V-7
LORENCITO CANYON MINE
OAK/PINYON STATISTICAL AREA COMPARISON STUDENT t-TEST
Reference Area Oak /Pinyon Disturbed Area Oak/Pinyon
Mean Basal Cover 34.10 35.70
Sample Variance 6.10 8.41
# of Sample Points 15.00 30.00
Calculated t Table Value 1.83
Student t Table Value 2.05
Null h othes is is acce ted
Mean Shrub Density 285.97 197.40
Sample Variance 5346.53 2106.81
# of Sample Points 30.00 43.00
Calculated t Table Value 6.36
Student t Table Value 2.09
Null h othes is is re'ected
Mean Protection (grams) 7.15 7.09
Sample Variance 2.79 2.69
# of Sample Points 20.00 29.00
Calculated t Table Value 0.12
Student t Table Value 2.05
Null h thes is is acce ted
`/cg.476/December 9. 1996 13
