•
COLORADO
HISTORICAL
SOCIETY
The Colorado Heritage Cenecr 1300 Broadway Denver, Colorado 80203
March 4, 1980

t
' . n ~.
Alan Salter
General Manager
King final Mine
4424 County Road 120
Hesperus, CO 81326
Dear Mr. Salter:
This office received your correspondence of February 21, 1980,
requesting a 1) statement for. the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation
Board concerning the cultural-historical impact of the King Coal Mine
operation, as. well as 2) information for the proposed federal lease.
31 '_
.We conducted a file search of the Colorado rchaeological Site
Inventory and the Colorado Inventory of liistor'c Sites, as well as
nominations pending or on the National Regist r of Historic Places,
for Township 35N, Range 11W, and Sections 2 and 32, which would in-
elude the boundaries for the mine bench, -he current federal coal
lease, and the application for coal lease.
There are no known Archaeological or Historical/Architectural
resources in the impact area of the proposed undertaking.
Based on the informatio supplied in your correspondence, it
appears that there would o nodfurther impact to cultural resources
due to the seriously disturUed nature of the terrain in the 8.36 acres
of the mine-bench area.
However, despite the fact that there will be no surface disturb-
ances in the proposed coal lease area, these mining o,peratioiis will
possibly create an indirect impact on potentially eligible cultural
resources due to the potential for vandalism on cultural resources.
There is always the possibility that unidentified Cultural Resources
exist within this area. Therefore, a professional survey should be
conducted Co IdentiE}c any Eligible Cultural Resources in the proposed
project area.
AS you know, the ultimate responsibility for compliance with the
National Historic Preservation Act, as implemented in 36 CFR 800,
remains with the federal agency and cannot be delegated by it.
