LJ
f~~""=1 Unitetl States
Department of
'r~ Agriculture
June 22, 1983
Dear Mr. Rapp:
SOiI
Conservation
Service
Exhibit D - 3~g 1
Regarding: Terry DeWitt Land Reclamation
A Sand Pi[ is being developed in 52 F2 SW4 7-23-46. Soils and vegetation
report is required by [he State of Colorado.
Soils in the described area are shown on attached map 1176 as 'Du' -
Duneland and 'Td' - Tivoli Sand. Thus far the mining activity has been
confined to the Duneland portion of the area and it is my understanding that this
will continue to be the policy.
Duneland is made up of active sand dunes that have little or no vegetation.
The sand is generally deep, but in a few places pockets have eroded down to
underlying, finer textured material. Water holding capacity and natural fertility
are very low.
This area will be quite difficult to revegetate. Normally, little or no
vegetation grows except during years of higher than normal rainfall. Surrounding
Duneland will complicate any attempt to revegetate because of shifting land.
Slopes should be no steeper than 3: 1. Soil tests for fertilizer require-
ments will be needed. Adapted native plants include - Sand bluestem, Sideoats
grama, Prarie sandreed, Sandhill muhly, Sand dropseed, Needle and thread,
Indian ricegrass, Red three-awn and Blowout grass.
These areas have not been stable since the first available aerial photos
were taken; however if revegetation is required the following plants are most
likely to survive: Sand bluestem, Yellow bluestem, Sideoats grama, Blue grama,
Yellow sweet clover, Switchgrass, Little bluestem, Indiangrass and Sand dropseed.
Some successful plantings of Russian Olives have been made on these sites where
drip irrigation is available.
If revegetation is required, mulching is a must. Materials for mulching
could be any of the following: grass hay or cereal straw at 4,000 lbs.lacre;
manufactured mulch netting; asphalt spray; Jute netting; excelsior mat; or
feedlot manure that has 60% or more by weight of heavy chunks 5" or more in
diameter at 20 tons or more per acre.
A seeding mixture example is:
Side oats grama - 1.5 lbs. Pure Live Seed per Acre
Sand dropseed - 0.1 lbs. "
Yellow sweet clover-2.0 lbs.
