?FINED LAND~LDLIFE STATEMENT/EVALUATION (T.'evised)
for limited impact and select regular mine applications
The following information pertaining to wildlife is provided for use by riined Land
R~eelamation Board in their consideration of a mining permit for:
DeWitt Excavating / Sand Pit / Sk'~ Sec. 7, T235, R461+'
Name/Type and Location of Hine (Legal)
ll.ildlife Species list:
-Pronghorn (?)
-Scaled Quail
-Cottontail
-Jackrabbit
-Raptors (Transient)
Endangered/critical species/impacted:
Npne that we are aware of.
~•
-N on game Birds b Mammals .(Especially [hose adapted
to sandy soil habitat types)
Critical habitats/vegetative communities impacted:
No critical habitats or vegetative communities, in relation to wildlife, are present;
however the sand sage / sand dune community is very fragile and special care needs to
be used in mining and rehabilitation.
Assessment of impact:
Due to it's proximity to Lamar and the fact that the area already consists mainly of a
sand dune, [he impact on wildlife will be minimal. However, if special care is not
taken in rehabilitating the site the blowout or sand dune will never be reclaimed and
may in fact become larger.
Hine Reclamation recommendations (include key species/habitats for which restoration
i:s designed).
Reclamation of the area should be done in strips from the south to the north so [hat
prevailing winds will not move sand onto reclaimed areas. Any slopes should be graded
[0 3:1 or less. Revegetation work should take place around the 1st of December or later
so as to prevent early germination during late warm spells. Mulching is a neccesity, if
revegetation is to be successful. Hydromulching would be ideal, followed by manure and
then stray, in terms of effectivness. De-hulled forms of Sand and Sellow Bluestem are
recorrvnended. Side oats Gramma and Sand Dropseed can also be used. All grass seeds
should be drilled, prferably when the sand is wet. This would also make equipment use
on the sand dune easier. Brush piles constructed on the area would also help stab-
ilize the sand and provide cover for numerous birds and mammals.
Prepared By; Bryant D. 6`ill, District k'ildlife Mgr.
