SO ERSET
M/ N/ N G C O M P A N Y
May 30, 1995
A. J. Waldron
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
RE: Springs 1-7 May Monitoring
Permit No. C-81-022
Dear Mr. Waldron:
III IIIIIIIIIIIII III
RECEIVED
JUN 0 5 1995
Division of minerals ~ Geology
On May 5, 1995, in accordance with the Division's monitoring
requirements, I attempted to monitor Springs 1-7 in the Coal
Gulch Trail area with the ATV. Spring 7 is required to be
monitored monthly, and is accessed in the winter months on foot.
Springs 1-6 are required to be monitored monthly from April to
October, recognizing the Pact that the Coal Gulch Trail area in
inaccessible during the winter months.
I was able to monitor Spring 1, 3, and 7. The lower portions of
the Coal Gulch Trail were covered with rockfall debris, but there
did not appear to be evidence of mass movement in the landslide
area. Snow was encountered at approximately the 8,000-foot
elevation. Water was running down and across the trail, creating
muddy and difficult travel conditions. At approximately the
8,200-foot elevation, before the turn-off to Spring 3, the snow
was of a depth to be impassable with the ATV. Spring 3 was
accessed on Yoot through knee-deep snow. Spring 2, 4, 5, and 6
were not monitored on May 5.
On May 30, 1995, another attempt was made to monitor Springs 2,
4, 5, and 6 before the end of the month. After several weeks of
wet weather, it was raining at the lower elevations today. At
approximately the 8,000-foot elevation, the rain turned to snow,
with snow covering the ground. I was able to monitor Springs 2
and 6, but was unable to reach Springs 4 and 5 because of the mud
and snow.
During the month of May, Springs 2, 3, and 6 were over-run by
surface water from the anowmelt run-off, and monitoring results
reflect the large volume of surface water at the monitoring
points. I would expect the same would be true for Springs 4 and
5, if I had been able to reach them.
P.O.
