. Mr. Dean Massey •
March 1, 1978
Page 4
formation. Because of the impermeability of
this formation, water passes through it only
in fractures, which conduct most of it to the
outcrop where it is produced as seeps and
springs. The springs emerge from the so-called
"broken zone" (shown on the stratigraphic column
submitted as part of Exhibit G), approximately 100
feet above the highest elevation of the retort and
associated mine workings. Nonetheless, a tiny
percentage of this water is carried through
fractures in the Green River formation through
other impermeable strata called the Four
Senators to the region of the retort.
There will be an "air level" above the top of the
next planned retort, Retort 6, separated from the
retort itself by a sill pillar approximately 50
feet thick. The air level will be designed to
serve as a water collection gallery and to drain
any water collected away from the retort. The
drifts leading from the air level will also be
designed so that any water that accumulates
in the gallery will flow by gravity away from
the spent retort. Thus, water flowing down toward
the top of Retort No. 6 via any occasional fractures
below the Broken Zone will be diverted around the
retort. The area around the retort will contain
several drifts, raises, inclines and other work-
ings that would intercept water which could reach
the retort.
Any water encountered in the retort itself ("retort
water") will be collected in contained facilities
segregated from the mine water, and recycled (after
separation of the oil) to a Thermo Sludge boiler
for further use in a closed system."
You also asked for a map showing a bird's eye view
of the location of the retorts. Enclosed are a topographic base
map and a mylar overlay showing the property boundaries, the
mahogany outcrop (usually appearing on sheer cliff) and the loca-
tion of the existing Retorts 1-5 and scheduled Retort 6. Furure re-
torts will first be located in the Northeast quarter of Section 25
or the Southeast quarter of Section 24, Township 2 South, Range 95
West of the 6th P.M., north and west of Retorts 4,5 & 6.
