Page 3
Adherence to these guidelines will help avoid the unnecessary take of migratory birds and the
possible need for law enforcement action.
The mine reclamation plan seems to be adequate so long as the project proponent implements it
appropriately and per Division of Minerals and Geology regulations. Conducting reclamation
activities concurrent with mining to the maximum extent possible is a positive approach.
Placement of trees and shrubs should imitate the surrounding natural landscape as much as
possible and we agree with and recommend irrigation of newly planted vegetation until it is
established. __ __- _ _ _ - _,__ . _ _ _ - _ __ ._ __ -
Without knowing more specifics regazding operations of the proposed quarry (e.g. hours of
operation, estimated truck traffic, noise levels, etc.), it is difficult to provide other information
regazding mitigation measures for impacts to wildlife during mining operations. However, the
recommendations listed above regazding protecting migratory birds are also important during
operations. Additionally, measures to decrease unnecessary traffic to/from the project site as
well as onsite should be taken to avoid collisions with wildlife. Deer, elk, and bighorn sheep aze
known to occur in the vicinity and possibly on the project site. Bighorn sheep aze especially
sensitive to disturbance from traffic and noise. The Colorado Division of Wildlife is the best
source of information regarding impacts to deer, elk, and bighorn sheep as well as other wildlife
that may occur on or near the project site. If the Service can be of further assistance, please
contact Laura Archuleta of this office at 303-236-4752.
Sincerely,
~C" d~'~" .~ ~.
Susan C.
