O. Hox 1430
Palisade, CO 81526
RE: Roadside & Cameo Hine C-81-041
Surface Water Sampling of the Colorado River
Dear Mr. Reschke,
In the permit renewal 02 process, Powderhorn Coal Company agreed to continue
monitoring of the Colorado River. The information was to be included in the next
Annual Hydrologic Report.
The Division conferred with staff members ae to the sampling method in the
Colorado River. The general consensus seems to be what significance does the
Roadside and Cameo discharge inputs have to the Colorado River overall. In other
words, Powderhorn should be able to provide the Division with the volume of flow
of the river so we know what percentage of flow is being adding to the river.
This information is available from the USGS slightly upstream of the mine,
possibly the irrigation canal diversion. Other parameters we feel would be of
use to assess the impacts to the river are EC and pH. This data may be obtained
from USGS or other possible sources upstream of the mine would determine assess
impacts.
A consideration in all of this is the accuracy of measurement by the laboratory
or instrumentation. If the lab's accuracy ie +~- 108 but the additional salt
load to the river is <0.18 basically any sampling would be insignificant.
The Division requests from Powderhorn the low flow of the Colorado River, EC, and
pH, the source (USGS, CDOH), and the location of sampling to be included in the
next Annual Hydrologic Report.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate
to call.
Sincerely,
~.
Erica S. Crosby
Reclamation Specialist
m:\coal\esc\roadside\930928
.. ~- .~,
