Dudash,Joe
From: Brown, Sandy
Sent: Wednesday, October 06, 2004 12:06 PM
To: Dudash, Joe
Subject: Bowie No. 2
Importance: High
Joe,
I got a call from Bob Major of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The BOR owns the Fire Mountain Canal and he is
concerned about the discharges from the Bowie No.2 Mine that go into the Deer Creek Ditch that ultimately go into the
canal. He had many questions regarding the design and construction of the ponds and the discharge from the ponds. I
gave him a general overview, but I want him to talk to you. I know for sure that he would like a copy of Map 20, the
sediment control map and most likely the as-built certifications. There may be more info. that he would like to see_ I also
explained to him that you had talked to BRLLC regarding the changes to Pond F. I was not sure where that is.
He also asked if BOR could be included on the notification list. I told him we would be sure to send him notice of
completeness for all future permitting actions. I told him that I did not realized that the BOR owned the canal, I thought it
was a private company. Their address is:
Bureau of Reclamation
Western Colorado Area Office
2764 Compass Drive, Suite 106
Grand Junction, CO 81506
Attn: Bob Major or Glen Stone
As an aside, Jim Kiger called yesterday. He expressed concern about the water quality in the ditch as Terror Creek pulls
water from either the Canal or the Deer Creek Ditch for dust control. The water was very foamy the other day and they
were wondering what was causing it. Jim K. thought the only water going into the ditch was the Bowie discharge. I am
headed up to West Elk tomorrow and I will stop by Bowie on Friday to see if they are discharging and take samples if they
are.
Please call Bob Major at 970-248-0613 when you return.
Thanks!
Sandy
