Banks and Gesso, LLC
EXHIBIT I -SOILS INFORMATION
Please refer to Exhibit C-2: Pre-Mining Map (Natural Features) and Exhibit I-1: Soils
Map for mapped USDA soils.
Overview
Soils within the proposed permit area consist of the following:
• Chipeta-Persayo-Rance complex (CIC) - 2 to10% slopes
• Menoken-Chacra clay loam (MkA) - 0 to 2% slopes
• Mesa gravelly clay loam, shale substratum (MsA) - 0 to 2% slopes
• Mesa gravelly clay loam (MoA) - 0 to 2% slopes
• Mesa clay loam (MIA) - 0 to 2% slopes
• Rough broken land (Ru)
Chipeta-Persayo-Rance complex (CIC) has 2- to 10-percent slopes and is generally
found on hills and ridges where Cretaceous shale beds are near the surface. This
complex consists of the southwestern corner of the site. Chipeta, Persayo and Rance
soils make up equal parts of the complex. The Chipeta series soils are shallow, well-
drained and fine-textured. These soils have apale-yellow or light yellowish brown
granular surface layer approximately 4-inches thick. The gray subsoil closely resembles
the underlying shale but has weak, blocky structure. Typically, the underlying shale
starts at a depth of approximately 10 inches and is gray or light yellowish brown in color.
Vegetation usually consists of mat saltbush, Gardner saltbush, shadscale saltbush and
scattered stands of galleta, Salina wildrye and squirreltail. Chipeta soils are highly
susceptible to erosion and require careful management. (USDA, SCS).
Menoken-Chacra clay loam (MkA) has 0- to 2-percent slopes and occurs on upland
slopes where bedrock is close to the surface. This soil makes up the majority of the
southwestern portion of the site. Menoken series soils are moderately deep, well drained
or moderately well drained and moderately fine textured. These soils have an
approximate 4- to 5-inch thick surface layer that is light brownish gray or grayish brown,
friable and granular. The subsoil is typically a light yellowish brown or light olive brown,
moderately fine textured soil with weak, prismatic structure or moderate, subangular
Haldorson Sand and Gravel Mine 03023
Haldorson and Sons, Inc.
