Engineer
Re: Gravel Pit Reclamation
Deaz Sir,
On 2-3-04, I inventoried the proposed gravel pit site to prepare a reclamation plan, as
requested by Ken Parker, Otero Co. Engineer. This site is located in sections 28, 29, 32, & 33 in
T23S; R57W.
The area to be mined is labeled Cascajo soils in the Otero Co. soil survey. I have
attached the soil description and map for this soil, The soil contains a great deal of gravel. This
particular site also has extreme slopes. Due to the extreme steepness of slopes and drought
conditions, the topsoil is extremely thin and existing vegetation is spazse, consisting primarily of
blue grama (85%), sanddropseed (8%), yucca (4%), and a variety of fortis (3%). There are no
current significant erosion events occurring within the area.
In section 33, the knoll to be mined has a microwave tower located on it. It is currently
fenced. If there aze any current use regulations regarding this azea due to the tower, they will
need to be addressed.
Reclamation procedures should be done as follows:
The mined area should be shaped and graded to slopes no steeper than 3:1. A topsoil
type medium should be spread over the area 6 inches thick. A mulch of either a manure
or weed free grass mulch must cover the topsoil. If the manure mulch is used, manure
should be applied at the rate of 30 tons per acre. In lieu of a manure mulch, a weed free
grass hay mulch at the rate of 5,000 pounds per acre can be applied. This hay must be
crhnped and anchored into the soil and 40 pounds per acre each of both nitrogen (N2)
and available phosphorus (P205) must be applied.
Grass seed should then be applied with a grass drill that has double disks, depth bands,
an agitator, and press wheels. Grass seeding should be accomplished from November
15 to April 1. A February or Mazch seeding is prefesed. This grass seed should be
drilled directly into the mulched seedbed. All livestock should be excluded from the
seeding for two growing seasons following drilling. Areas that do not have an adequate
stand of grass after the second growing season should be retreated. Weed control, either
chemical or mechanical, should be done during the growing season.
Since the soils on the site will be radically changed following gravel mining, a different
permanent vegetative species composition should be seeded. This native mix will
establish a protective cover for the newly reclaimed area. Other adapted native fortis
The Natural Resources Conserva5on Service works hand-in-hand with USDA MRCS IS AN EQUAL, OPPORTUNITY
the American people to conserve natural resources on private lands.
