JERIS A. DANIELSON, DEPUTY STATE ENGINEER
SUBJECT: FLATIRON PAVING CO. - GREELEY WEST PIT, WELD COUNTY,
APPLICATION FOR MINING AND RECLAMATION PERMIT
As requested by your office, we have reviewed the application for a gravel
pit near Greeley. The following additional information is required before we
can recommend approval of the application:
1 . Approximately 20 alluvial wells are located within 1/4 mile
of the proposed pit. These wells vary from 8 to 61 feet deep
and from 150 to 700 gallons per minute. What affect will
dewatering to a depth of 40 feet have on these wells? Will
the applicant install monitoring wells between the mining
areas and his property lines to determine drawdown conditions ?
What evidence can the applicant provide that the mining
operation will have no detrimental effects on these wells?
2. Pages C-5 and C-6 discuss the "18-acre lake that exists on
the mining site and will be present after reclamation" . Our
measurements on sheet 5-5 (Reclamation Plan) show that this
lake will be approximately 35 acres in area. This would in-
dicate that evaporation losses will be approximately 90 acre-
feet annually, instead of the applicant's estimate of 45 acre-
feet. The applicant should review his calculations concerning
evaporation losses. We also recommend that the Board require
the applicant to provide permanent replacement water for
these losses in order to prevent injury to water rights in the
South Platte Basin.
oL~(
