Waldron
Division of Minerals and Geology
1313 Sherman Street, Room 215
Denver, CO 80203
Division or minerals ~ Geology
RE: Somerset Mining Company
Bear Creek and Hubbard Creek April Monitoring
Permit No. C-81-022
Dear Mr. Waldron:
On April 5, 1995, in accordance with the Division's monitoring
requirements, I attempted to monitor the Bear Creek and Hubbard
Creek sites. Monitoring requirements for April, in addition to the
regular weekly inspections and monitoring of the Hubbard Creek
Pond, are measurements of field parameters in groundwater
monitoring wells B-6 and H-10, and measurements of field parameters
and sample for full suite laboratory parameters of H-1, Hubbard
Creek.
As the Division knows, the groundwater well monitoring equipment is
bulky, and motorized transportation to within reasonable distance
of the wells is required for transportation of the equipment. A
Cat 966 front end loader was used to clear the rocks, fallen
timber, and snow from the Bear Creek Road, beginning at Highway 133
to the B-6 well site. Upon reaching the B-6 well site, snow had to
be removed from on top of the front axle of the four-wheel-drive
pickup carrying the monitoring equipment.
Depth to water in B-6 well in April was 748.2 feet, pH = 8.7,
conductivity = 1230, temperature = 20 degrees C. Time required to
obtain the data was 4 hours. Estimated cost to obtain the data was
Cat 966 with operator for 4 hours @ $85 = $340, pickup for 4 hours
@ $25 = $100, Environmental Coordinator for 4 hours @ $50 = $200,
total cost = $640.
The Cat 966 was then taken to Hubbard Creek to clear the road for
access to the H-10 well site. After starting work on the Hubbard
Creek slide area, a second Cat 966 was taken to the Hubbard Creek
road, to remove the first Cat 966 from the slide and to assist in
clearing the road. As the end of the shift approached, both
P.O.
