As indicated in Table 3, a maximum of 6,451 acres in the 9enerai
vicinity of the Orchard Valley Mine area have been inventoried at
various levels of intensity. Within this area, only 18 cultural
resources have been located fora combined historic and prehistoric
site density of 1 resource per 358 acres. In archaeological terms
this is an exceedingly low density. Due to the variable nature of
the survey coverage in the 1977 survey effort (Baker 1977) it is
believed this should be revised downward to something approaching
1 resource for every 200 to 250 acres except near the valley floor
of the North Fork where numerous historic sites exist. The result
of limited sample transects in the area showed a site density of
.23 sites per square mile (Hibbets 1979).
Summary of Known Resources
With the exception of the additional five resources indicated in
Table 3, the thirteen resources recorded in the 1977 baseline work
still constitute the majority of resources known from the immediate
study area. (This is with the exception of possible historical
architectural resources recorded in the North Fork Valley in recent
years.) Of these, only three are believed to be eligible for
nomination to the National Register of Historic Places as indicated
in Table 4, which is a reprint of Table 1 from the 1977 baseline
report (baker 1977). Other resources recorded since 1977 include
two prehistoric sites and 8 isolated finds and 2 historic Euroamerican
. sites. None of these have been suggested to be eligible for inclusion
in the National Register of Historic Places.
Site Evaluation for National Register Eligibility
As shown in Table 4, only 3 sites are believed to be eligible for
inclusion in the National Register. These are 5 DT 89, 5 OT 90, and
5 DT 92. There are,,respectively, a multi component homestead complex
in the North Fork Valley outside the proposed lease area, the Roatcap
Sawmill and aboriginal site on the West Fork of Terror Creek, and the
Cowan Mine Trestle ruins near the portal of the Orchard Valley Mine.
It is possible that other sites recorded in 1977 might today prove
to be eligible for the National Register due to better comparative
data and changes and/or clarification of eligibility guidelines.
As will be discussed, it is highly probable that a variety and
significant number of Register eligible resources exist within or
near the study area.
n
18
