~~C~IV ED
OCT 2 `J 2002
Division at Minerals and Geology
October 26, 2002
LORENCITO COAL COMPANY
20500 Highway 12
Weston, CO 81091
(719) 868-2115
Colorado Department of Health
Water Quality Control Division
Permits and Enforcement Section
WQCD-PE-B2
4300 Cherry Creek Drive South
Denver, CO 80246-1530
RE: NPDES Discharge Monitoring Reports for Third Quarter 2002
Attached are the Discharge Monitoring Reports for Third Quarter 2002 at the Lorencito
Mine (Permit 000045080). Sediment control facilities (sedimentation ponds) for
approved discharge sites 006A, 007A, 008, 009, 009A and O1 OA have been constructed.
No mine related disturbances have occurred in areas reporting to the other proposed
discharge points.
Discharges occurred only through dischazge point 009 during the third quarter. No
discharges occurred at any of the other sites. Rainfall events occurring on the evenings of
September 9 and September 18, 2002, resulted in sufficient flow to Pond 009 to result in
discharge. The Mine is requesting the application of Alternate Limitations (for events
less than or equal to the 10 year, 24-hour precipitation event) for Total Iron and Total
Suspended Solids. J.L. Torres Company monitors precipitation for the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers at the Trinidad Lake Project (approximately 10 miles east of the Mine Site).
A copy of their precipitation record for this period is attached as supporting evidence.
Should you have any questions or need additional information, please let contact me.
Sincerely/,,
~~(J'
Ronald Thompson
Consultant for Lorencito Coal Company
Attachments
cc: U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Water Management Division
Compliance Branch 8 WM-C
Denver Place, Suite 500
999 18`" Street
Denver, CO 80202-2405

Mr. Kent Gorham
Environmental Protection Specialist
Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology
215 Centennial Building
1313 Sherman Street
Denver, CO 80203-22T
