•
Section 785.19 (c) Continued.
Observations during construction of the transect wells show that
while the gravel deposits are saturated and transmit water when
excavated, the impermeable clay surrounding the gravel effectively
prevents these deposits from transmitting water to or from the
overlying stream and root zone. This fact is reflected in the
transect well water levels and the low water table shown on Table 105,
Hydrographs of Transect Wells in Eckman Park Drainage 1979; Figure 44,
Hydrograph of 1979 Transect Wells in the Eckman Park Drainage; and
the Eckman Park Stream Channel Cross Sections (Map 51), and the
lack of base flow to the stream in the dry months from ground water
contribution. As documented in Figure 44, Hydrographs of 1979
Transect Wells in the Eckman Park Drainage, the water table under
the ephemeral stream is lowered substantially by underflow drainage
in summer, and does not provide water to the stream or root zone.
Therefore, ground water availability in the study area is not
• sufficient for subirrigation.
Water Quality. The water quality of the study area is based on
samples taken on a weekly basis throughout the spring runoff season
on one well from each of the seven transects. These data are
presented in Table 6, Summary of Energy Fuels Corporation Ground
Water Quality Characteristics. The predominant water type is
calcium bicarbonate, intermixed with sodium and sulfate ions. Well
and surface water samples were very similar in chemical character-
istics and ionic content as shown by comparing the above table with
Table 14, Summary of Energy Fuels Corporation Surface Water Quality
Characteristics, indicating that there is little or no contribution
from bedrock aquifers to shallow ground water or streams in the
study area. Average chemical characteristics were a pH of 7.15,
electrical conductivity of 718.9 umho/cm, calcium carbonate hard-
ness of 358.8 mg/1, and total dissolved solids of 630.9 mg/1.
These data indicate alkalinity and moderately high salt load,
• making the water marginally useful only for stock or agricultural
purposes.
785-12
