United Sta:as Soil
•
Department of Conservation
Agriculture Service
-2-
Seeding in late fall around October 10-15 is recommended so that germination
will occur the following spring. The seeding rates given here are rates
for drilling and if broadcast method is used the seeding rates should be doubled.
6. In this particular area I would suggest mulching when the area has been planted.
Several good commerical mulches are available and work very well. If a straw
mulch is used it should be crimped into the ground and put on at a rate of
3,000 pounds per acre.
The seeding should be protected from livestock, vehicles, etc. until the plants
are well established.
l/ Topsoil is defined for this purpose as material suitable for growing plants in.
It includes the rather thin layer found on top of the earth that is highest in
organic matter And normally referred to as topsoil plus the upper portion of the
soil underneath this layer referred to as subsoil.
If we can he of further assistance to you, please feel free to call on us.
Sincerely,
Conservation Technician
CB:ce
Enclosures
O
