Pit Name -Pig Mesa Gravel Pit
Location, Legal -Part of Ei NE's, Nz Nz SE'~,SW`~ NE's Sect. 4, T155,R95W, 6th P.M.
Sise - 9.05 acres of a 160 acre tract.
Area lies -Approximately 1 mile SW of Cory, Colo.
PTEVlOllS Use - Rangeland and a Gravel Pit
Previous Plants - Predominantely, Mat Saltbush, Cactii and Shadscale on the
upland part with Cottonwood and willows on the river-bottom
part.
Soils -Numerous soils from Alluvial riverbottom to barren shale on 1-40%
slopes.
Top Soil -The predominant area is a silty clay loam 0 to 19 inches deep.
gravel greater then 1~" - 8-10 % est.
Gravel Depth - 40-50 ft.
Soil under gravel - Shale
Water table - at 2-6 feet on the riverbottom: none on the upland.
Flood Plain - Occasional on the riverbottom: none on the upland.
Re~~vegetation: On the designated 9.05 acres.
To re-vegetate the site after mining is completed the base should
be returned to as near level as is practical or not to exceed 3:1
slope. Top soil should be spread at least 6 inches deep and
smoothed over the area.
The site will not be irrigated so dryland species of grasses should
be used for site re-seeding.
The following mixture is recommended per acre.
30% Yellow Sweet clover X 3.5= 1.0 lb. PLS
50% Western Wheatgrass X 8.0= 4.0 lbs. PLS
20% Crested Wheatgrass X 5.0- 1.0 lb. PLS
Total 6.0 lbs. PLS
PLS = Pure Live Seed.
A late fall seeding date is usually better for native species so the
seed lays dormant over winter and has early spring moisture for
germination and establishment.
