• 5.0 THREATENED AND ENDANGERED SPECIES <br />Of species listed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service 119801 as threatened <br />or endangered, lediococttr4 hnwu-Ltortii IKnowlton's hedgehog cactus) is <br />known to occur in La Plata County 1U.5. Forest Service antl U.S. Fish and <br />Wildlife Service 19781 and is classified as endangered. There it occurs <br />on "flat to shallow clay slopes in Pinyon-Juniper-Sagebrush stands" at <br />an elevation of 5,300 to 5,500 feet. These elevations are lower than <br />those of the Carbon Junction Mine area, which range from 6,500 to 7,200 <br />feet. Another cactus occurring in the southwest corner of the state which <br />is designated as threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (19801 <br />is Sc(e2ococtu~ mega-vv~cdoe (Mesa Verde cactus). Like the previous species, <br />it is only known to occur at lower elevations (4,000 to 5,000 feet!. <br />Neither of these species has been observed on the project site to date, <br />although a thorough area inventory has not been completed as yet. Of <br />species listed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management 119811 as "Sensitive <br />Plant Taxa" or "Plant Species of Special Concern" and of those listed by <br />the Colorado Natural Heritage Inventory (19821 as "Plant Species of <br />Special Concern," none have been observed in the study area to date. <br />~u22cu~ #urtGi rte,(.Lu (shrub live oak), which occurs sparingly in Pinyon/ <br />Juniper Woodland of the study area, was included in a previous draft of <br />the latter list but has since been deleted. <br />• <br /> <br />-R_ <br />
