This pit will be operated on a demand basis. Normally, the mining and
stockpiling of this clay will take two to three months , once per year. When
' this type of clay is required by the brick plant, it will be removed by truck
from the mine stockpile.
As operations begin on each stage, some of the overburden will be used
to backfill the open stopes, and the remainder will be removed and used to
backfill the previously mined area, Topsoil in the areas to be mined is
' virtually non-existant due to the steep, rocky slopes; therefore, no topsoil
stockpiles will be made.
' The overburden will be removed using a bulldozer and ripper. At this
time it is not known if the overburden has to be drilled and blasted. If
' the overburden is too hard an air-trac and explosives will be used to fracture
the ground and the dozer will then remove the overburden.
After the overburden is removed, the clay will be mined with a bull-
dozer. In areas where the vein is too narrow for a bulldozer to safely
operate, the top half of the clay will be blasted down; providing the larger
tmaneuvering platform needed. The clay will then be stockpiled in the area
t that the overburden was removed. The clay is then loaded with front end
loaders and hauled with trucks to the plants.
There are approximately 3.2 acres of existing access roads . Additional
access to the mining areas will be within the affected lands. Very minor
amounts of water may be used to control dust under the most adverse traffic
or wind conditions. In general , water on a clay surface creates a very slick
1 condition, making it difficult to work; thereby, watering will only occur when
' absolutely necessary to control fugitive dust.
1
