Gunnison
~~
TD:
FROM
RE•:
~J
Main Relocation at the
No. 1 Mine
Pursuant to your request, I have reviewed the Geotechnical Adequacy
Response submitted by West Elk Coal, Inc.,.concerning their request to
relocate the proposed mains at the Mt. Gunnison No. 1 underground coal
mine. The Company, a subsidiary of Anaconda Minerals, has submitted a
Technical Revision application requesting the main relocation several
months ago. The applicant has proposed the relocation to avoid a portion
of the mine plan area which has been determined to contain decreased seam
thickness, splits and potentially poor roof conditions, rendering the
coal economically unrecoverable. Their requests to forego recovery of
the effected resource and to amend their plan appropriately have been
reviewed and approved by the Mineral Management Service, now a division
of the United States Bureau of land Management.
West Elk Coal has responded to five concerns included in my earlier
memo to you and subsequently forwarded to the Company as a component of
. our adequacy review on April 4, 1983. The Company's responses were as
follows:
(1) In response to my concern that their amended."iVO. 1 Mine Plan"
map depicted varying mine panel sizing, the Company has
completely amended the map to correctly portray intended panel
sizing.
(2) In response to my concern that the amended maps failed to
present mining sequencing, the Company has amended the maps to
depict the proposed mining sequencing.
(3) In response to my concerns regarding the imp ac t. upon the
originally designated subsidence test panel, the company has
revised Exhibit 3.4.S.A of the original application, entitled
"Subsidence Evaluation For Mt. Gunnison No. 1 Mine". In doing
so West Elk Coal has designated a new subsidence test panel
which appears to be analogous to the originally designated
panel in its data collection opportunities.
(4) In response to my concern regarding the integrity of the
original mine sealing plan, the Company has provided an amended
map indicating the locations of the two relocated seals and
adding an additional seal for the Sylvester Gulch ventilation
portal.
.~
423 Centennial Building. 1313 Sherman Street Denver.
