C J
•
are shown on Plate C-9.
The method ultimately selected for increasing the
stability of the slope should be based on cost and practi-
cality of the alternate construction procedures. The steep
natural slope which rises above the crest of the cut could
make simply flattening the existing slope from its toe im-
practical, yet it may be difficult to produce a properly bal-
anced cut and fill which results in a uniform slope angle.
FThichever method is used for increasing the stability
of the slope, it is probable that the existing drainage ditch
will be filled by the reconstruction and will have to be re-
located.
If the mine management decides to postpone the re-
medial measures until more supporting data are collected with
the help of appropriate monitoring systems, at least two in-
clinometers and two piezometers would be desirable in the
area as the recommended monitoring system.
4.2.4 Other Soil Cuts
Other cuts that have been excavated in soils have
been documented during Phase 1 of our study (see our report
titled "Geotechnical Review, Orchard Valley Coal 1`line, Paonia,
Colorado, for Colorado idestmoreland, Inc.", dated July, 1981).
In this report, we have evaluated the soil cuts as
being excavated at slopes between 45 to 55 degrees; such
slopes are very steep for unconsolidated sediments. It was
also observed that the surfaces of these cuts have been ex-
ceptionally well vegetated; because of the vegetation, the
- 27 -
GEONYDRO CONSU Li1NG, INC
