DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
David H. Getches, Executive Director
MINED LAND RECLAMATION
DAVID C. SNELTON, Director
Richartl D. Lamm
Governor
May 8, 1985
Mr. Dick Hines
Colorado Division of Highways
4340 E. Louisiana Avenue
Denver, Colorado 80222
Re: Nordyke Pit - File No. M-85-040
Dear Mr. Hines:
DIVISION
I received the copy of the publication and the proofs of notifications to
adjacent landowners for the Nordyke Pit. The publication appears to be
,,,~~~dequate, but I received no proof that the adjacent landowner to the east, Mr.
\ /Chester A. Akers, was properly notified. Please submit this certified mail
IX\ receipt as soon as it is available.
I should also mention my conversation today with Dennis Zachman of the B.L.M.
He called me as a result of a site visit he made to the proposed Nordyke Pit.
He called a problem to my attention that I had not considered in my adequacy
letter to you. Thus, I will ask the question he raised now. How is the
gravel to be brought down the steep hillside to be moved along the haul road
south off the permit area? The present map merely shows the haul road
deadending into the steep hillside.
I presume a switchback haul road could be used. If a conveyor is used, a
staging area by the creek would probably be needed. Such an area would be
close to the creek and would need to be bermed or otherwise isolated from the
creek.
Mr. Zachman mentions that an alternative access route over B.L.M. land could
also possibly be used and is willing to discuss such a route if you prefer.
He also mentioned that such an alternate route should in no way be considered
to be a requirement of your free use permit for the Nordyke Pit.
Please clarify these two matters for me before the scheduled May 22-23, 1985
Board meeting.
Sincerely,
~ ~
Mark S.
