EXISTING VEGETATION AND,SOILS
CORTEZ PIT - NIELSONS
This pit site lies above McElmo Creek just southwest of Cortez, Colorado.
Conditions are dry most of the year with no existing irrigation.
Existing vegetation is spotty with pinon and juniper trees mixed with
sagebrush and grasses. It provides no commercial feed and it's benifit
to wildlife is minimal.
Topsoil covers approximately 50% of the pit site and is sandy and stony
loam in consistancy. Depth to sandstone bedrock is about one foot. Due
to the granular nature of the soil, water holding capacity is very low.
For a more detailed description of these items, see the attached veg-
etation and soils map of the pit area, prepared by the U.S. Soil Conser-
vation Service.
i ~. _. ~ ~x :.;,,.
