•
The vegetative types dicussed will provide a very diverse habitat
when canopy cover is not excessive and overgrazing has not occurred.
Steep slopes and southern exposures also limit plant diversity and
production. Diversity on the shrub sites on the Hawksnest unit is
limited mainly by the excessive oak brush canopy and competition,
while the understory on the Pinyon-Juniper is limited by droughth,y
soil conditions.
Reestablishing vegetation on the Pinyon-Juniper woodland would be
difficult at best, if not impossible on many areas. Disturbance of
these areas should be held to a minimum and restricted to favorable
north or east slopes of 20 percent slope or less.
Revegetating shrubland communities is much more favorable and successful
because of deeper soils. Wheatgrasses and desirable shrubs can
successfully be replanted if topsoil and subsoil depth is maintained
to provide a minimum root growth medium. Attention to slope and
aspect must be maintained here also, as on the Pinyon-Juniper wood-
land sites.
r1
~J
•
