Interburden Adjacent to Coal Seams
In previous work, the Research Division carried out a •
series of hot-water leaching tests on interburden associates
with acid immediately adjacent (1 f.t. above and 1 ft. below) ~o
the major coal seams. Samples were prepared composites of
interburden from four drill holes in sections 2 and 3 (3-56-==+,
3-78-D1, 2-36-J11, and 2-18-K2), seams X thru I'. Results of
these tests are included in this report for comparison purposes.
A11 samples subjected to water extraction treatment and
analyses were prepared by the procedure described below and
illustrated in Figure ~±.
Soil Preparation Procedure
1, Record weight of core (2" diameter), as received.
Report description and color of core. Crush rock core
in hammermill to .~1/4" top size, then remove oversize
rock (+ 4 mesh) by screening. Recycle oversize rock •
thru crusher and screen out -4 mesh x 0 material.
Recycle until 100% passes thru 4-mesh screen. Record
weight of product.
2. When weight of crushed rock (-4 mesh) is <4,000 g.,
crush all rock to pass 100% thru -8 mesh screen.
3. Split out ca. 1,000 g. or one-half the specimen (-8 mesh)
by use of riffle. Store other half of sample as reserve.
4. Crush 1,000 g. (8 mesh x 0) specimen to -60 mesh by
means of Holmes pulverizer.
5. Air dry pulverized product overnight at room temperature
(22-25°C). Record sample cacights before and after drying.
6. Detc nnine residual moisture of air dried sample by use •
of Cenco moisture Balance.
