V. SAMPLING TECHNIQUES AND SAt-iPLE PREPARATION
Drill hole G-59 was re drilled when it was discovered •
the top 20 feet of drill core was missing. Replacement of
the missing core was accomplished by redrilling to a depth oi=
30 feet from the original drill site. Drill cuttings
were collected and divided into five sections, basis soil an :?
rock identities, by J. Semborski, Colowyo geologist. Selected
two-foot core sections were sampled from the core boxes on the
basis of the litho Logy report shown in Figure 3.
& B Horizon Soils. 0 to 5 feet
Sample No. 38 represents the A horizon soil, i.e., topsoil,
which shows a thickness of 2 feet in the vicinity of G-~9. The
collected sample is characterized as dark broom in color and is
a sandy clay soil (Figure 3). Recorded weight of the sample
was 1,984 g. (see Table II).
B horizon soil, sample No. 37, has a thickness of 3 feet; •
depth of core measured from 2 feet to 5 feet. The soil is
described as a silty clay containing fragments of weathered
sandstone and is brown to gray in color. Recorded weight of
sample equalled 1,829 g., as received.
rmost Interburden, 5 feet to 28 feet
Interburden samples--Nos. 30, 35 and 34--represent the
core interval between 5 feet and 28 feet. The samples are
described as brocanish in color, which becomes lighter in color
with increasing depth. ~Rt'consis~ mainly of sandstone and
clay, stained c~ith iron oxide (see Figure 3). Weights of the
separate fractions appear in Table II.
Interburden Bcloco 28 feet Dcnth
dos.
The remaining core footage for sample aes. 33 to 1 are
described in detail in Figure 3, the ].ithology report (SecCion IV). •
Weights of the selected core sections, as received, and tl~e
moisture contents of each sample appear in Table II, this section.
