46 <br />• Species Evaluation Plot <br />a <br />Two replications of 40 species were seeded in three 4.6-m rows west of <br />the Main Plot (Figure 9). Prior to seeding, the plot was uniformly fertilized <br />with nitrogen at a rate of 66 kg N/ha and phosphorus at 220 kg PZOs/ha. <br />Species seeded are listed in Table 12. <br />Results <br />Main Plot <br />Treatment differences averaged over three replications are outlined in <br />.Figures 10-12 and Table 13. Treatment 2 proved superior to all other treat- <br />ments in total seeded and invading biomass and cover. Its biomass values were <br />significantly higher (p~.10) than Treatments 1, 1, 6, and 8. Nitrogen and <br />• mulching applications thus show a negligible influence on plant growth <br />~ response. Contributing to Treatment 2's superior plant vigor are the high <br />values of seeded grasses and forbs, and to a lesser extent invading forbs. <br />The cover in Treatment 2 was higher than that occurring on other treatments, <br />but the magnitude of the difference proved to be only marginally higher than <br />the Control at p`.10. <br />There was no difference (p`.10) between the density levels across all <br />eight treatments when total life form composition :gas aiea;ured. On a soe~ies <br />level however, all mulched treatments proved higher (p_.10) than nonmulched <br />treatments, regardless of fertilizer appiications, for seeder grasses jna <br />forbs (Figure 12). In addition, Treatment ~ allowed signif.icantiy more <br />invading grasses than all other treatments (p~.10), and Treatment 3 allowed <br />a greater number of invading forbs than the next closest treatment, <br />Treatment 4. <br />
