C~IDVINEY ROCg 11ZINE
A hydrologic monitoring program was implemented at the Chimney Rock Mine located 20 miles
south~vcst of Pagosa Springs, Colorado in October 1980. This program currently consists of three surface
stations and eight ground water wells. The results of monitoring activities [or the period of September 1989
arc summarized in the following paragraphs with summary data sheets attached.
Sl1RFACE WATER MONITORING
Surface water monitoring was conducted at three locations on Stollstcimer Creek (S-1, S-2 and S-3).
Flows condition were et record low conditions due to lack of rain. Flow was measured at 0, 1.14 and 0.95
cfs for Stations S-1, S-2 and S-3, respectively. No crest measurements were recorded at any of the three
stations.
Water quality samples were collected at each of the three surface stations during the September
sampling. The water is classined as a calcium/sulfate-bicarbonate water with relatively low concentrations
of metals and mineralization. Mineralization was increased over previous samplings due to the low flow
conditions. The sample collected at S-2 also exhibited higher concentrations of dissolved solids, contributed
primarily by sulfates.
A quarterly pond inspection was conducted on September 29, 1489. No erosional or structural problems
were observed. Department of Health NPDES sampling and reporting was conducted over the quarter with
copies of the reports scot to CMLRD.
Grnnndwoter Monitoring
Alluvial ground water was monitored at wells A-1, W-1, W-5 and W-7. The deeper Fruitland Formation
~~:~s monitored at wells W-6, W-9 and W-10. The reclaimed area was monitored at well W-16.
1Vater levels monitored in the four alluvial wells exhibited a decrease over the levels measured in June,
1959. This corresponds Huth the decrease in surface [low of Stollsteimer Creek. Results of water chemistry
analyses at wells A-1, W-5 and W-7 indicate similar characteristic as surface water. Well A-1 exhibited a
sodium/bicarbonate sulfate type water rather than acalcium/bicarbonate type. This change in water quality
may be from the mining activity and seepage from the reclaimed pit located up-gradient of the well. Well
A-1 still had a much higher aluminum concentration.
The deeper Fruitland Formation was monitored at stations W-b, W-9 and W-10. Water level of the
three wells decreased over the quarter. Well W-6 was dry. The water quality was consistent with previous
samplings being asodium-ralcium/bigrbonate type.
Well W-16 in the reclaimed area exhibited a lower water level from the June, 1989 monitoring period.
\Vatcr quality can be classified as sodium/bicarbonate. Concentrations of iron, nitrate and ammonia were
also elevated. Trace metals concentrations were low.
