192
• Site: 5MF333 (Figs 5, 54).
site type: Open architectural.
Location: NW;NE;, Sec. 22, T5n, R92w; UTM Zone 13, E270,225m., N4,472,075m.
Description: 5MF333 is a bicomponent site overlooking the brook fed by Ral-
ston Springs. The site is located on the sage flat between the arroyo in the
bottom of Ralston Draw and a high ridge to the north and northeast. The vege-
tation on the site is mainly sagebrush and grasses, but juniper appears on
I
the hillside to the north. The elevation is 6680 ft. (2,306 m.).
The prehistoric component of the site consists of a scatter of flakes
and tools, covering an area 20 by 50 m. along the edge of the eroding arroyo
bank. Nothing was found on the undisturbed flat adjacent to the arroyo bank,
so it appears that the remainder of the site is buried. There were no concen-
~• trations of artifactual materials, nor were there any permanent features visi-
ble.
The historic component of the site has three features. The first is a
small, one-room frame structure, roughly 3 by 4 m. in size. The second is
a pole and wire sheep corral 15 m. to the south of the frame Structure. The
third is a partially filled rock-lined pit, possibly a foundation hole. No
historic artifacts were seen. The site is relatively undisturbed aside from
the erosion taking place at the edge of the arroyo and the presence of large
quantities of cattle manure inside the structure.
Diagnostic artifacts: Metates, two Type IB, one Type IC; mano, Type IVD;
chopper, Type IA; biface, Type IJ.
evaluation: 5MF333's historic component requires evaluation by a trained his-
torian. However, the site, as a geographic entity, should be nominated to the
~ • NRHP on the grounds that it has potential for yielding information important
to prehistory. The site has at least one buried prehistoric component and a
possibility of others.
