ztz
• site: 5MF344 (Fig,s 60, 61).
Site Type: Open lithic.
rotation: NW;NW;, Sec. 32, TSn, R93w; UTM Zone 13, E257,150m. N4,479,400m.
Description: 5MF344 is located on both sides of a seasonal drainage that
trends westward on the western end of Duffy Mountain. The site is protected
on all sides but the west. The elevation is 6140 ft. (1,871 m.). Vegetation
surrounding the site consists of sagebrush, rabbitbrush, bitterbrush, grasses,
and cactus. The nearest water is in the seasonal drainage that bisects the
site. An additional and more reliable water source is the Yampa River 150 m.
to the west.
Much of the artifactual material was located in several concentrations
adjacent to the drainage, but a diffuse scatter of flakes also extends to
• the south and east, covering a total area of 225 by 230 m. Although flakes
constitute a sizable portion of the collection, projectile point fragments,
biface and uniface tool fragments, and a chopper were recovered.
The site is eroding in the central portion through which the drainage
runs. Cultural disturbance is present in the form of numerous jeep trails
which cut through and run adjacent to the site.
Diagnostic artifacts: Projectile point fragments, Types IA, IVB; and a chop-
per, Type I8.
evaluation: 5MF344 lacks the potential to provide information important to
prehistory, and should not be nominated to the NRHP. However, the site may
have other scientific value and should be given further consideration-if en-
dangered by future developments.
n
LJ
