196
~,
`•
site: 5MF338 (Figs 5, 57).
Site Type: Open camp.
Location: SE ;NE ;, Sec. 3, TSn, R92w; UTM Zone 13, E270,750m., N4,477,260m.
Description: 5MF338 is an open camp located on the upper terrace over]ooking
the Yampa River and Round Bottom. North of the site lies the Yampa River flood-
plain, encircled by a meander of the Yampa River. To the south, the ground
rises to Iles Mountain. The site is situated on the terrace edge, facing north,
at an elevation of 6180 ft. (1,884 m.). The nearest water is the Yampa River,
300 m, away. Vegetation at the site includes sagebrush and grasses. Below
the site, on the floodplain, the meadow area has pasture grasses and cotton-
woods.
Artifactual materials were seen as a thin scatter of lithic debitage and
a few tools covering an area 85 by 95 m. No permanent features were observed.
The site is disturbed by a road cut transecting the site from north to south,
where flakes were seen. This site has also been recorded by the University of
Colorado as 5MF465, SMF339 and 5MF340, two other sites, lie in the near vicin-
ity.
Diagnostic artifacts: Graver, Type Ii; hammerstone, Type IA; metate, Type IB.
evaluation: 5MF338 has no potential for yielding information important to pre-
history. However, the site may have scientific value and should be afforded
protection under other antiquities legislation.
•
