Simpson, P.E.
Sate Engineer
We have received your letter of October 31, 2006, requesting renewal of the above
referenced substitute water supply plan ("SWSP") to cover depletions caused by an existing
gravel mining operation. The required fee of $257.00 for the renewal of this substitute supply plan
has been submitted (receipt no. 3610512). The original supply plan was approved on April 30,
2001 and was most recently renewed on December 13, 2005.
Plan Operation
This plan seeks to replace depletions resulting from mining at the S&H Mine Gravel Pit
("S&H Pit") operated by Platte Sand and Gravel LLC. The depletions that result from the
mining operation are evaporation, water lost in mined product, concrete belching and dust
suppression.
During 2006 Platte Sand and Gravel began construction of a slurry wall liner around
Sharkey's Lake as shown in attached Figure 1. It is projected that the liner would be completed
by the end of October 2006 at which time the 90 day liner test will be conducted. Should the liner
pass the 90 day test, Platte Sand and Gravel will begin dewatering the lined area. The water
confined within the slurry wall lining will be pumped directly to the South Platte River to allow dry
mining. If the slurry wall fails the 90 day test, mining and dewatering of the area will not begin until
the appropriate repairs have be made and the 90 day test is successfully completed. If the liner is
approved prior to dewatering at the site and all water from the dewatering operation is pumped to
the South Platter River without consumption, there will be no augmentation requirement for the
dewatering pumping.
