i
II. INVENTORY METHODS
The species inventory list was derived from baseline data and methods devel-
oped by Ecology Consultants, Inc. in addition to information gathered by
Trapper Mine personnel. Portions of the work performed by Ecology Consult-
ants, Inc. was concerned with the development of the Yampa Project which
includes data from geographic areas no[ relative to Trapper Mine. Excerpts
from this report relative to Trapper's Mine proposed mine plan area are incor-
porated into the application.
A. Ma~mnals
Species inventory of mammals known to occur within the proposed mine plan area
are listed in Table 2.4-1. This information is based on small mammal cropping
data and direct observation of maimsalian species and signs of [heir activity.
Table 2.4-2 lists species that may occur within [he proposed mine plan area
• and adjacent areas as derived from the Colorado Division of Wildlife "Lati-
long" studies.
1. Sma11 Mammals
In 1971 and 1972, the presence and relative abundance of small mammal species
living in various habitats in the Craig area were evaluated. Standardized
trapping efforts followed the NACSM format, which requires three consecutive
nights of trapping in order to estimate density of small mammals by Zippin
calculations. Barometric changes associated with weather frontal movements
influence small mammal activity markedly. During most of the [rapping opera-
tions, weather changes occurred which obscured the meaning of density estima-
tions. Demographic data collected from populations censused by [he NACSM
transects were analyzed and compared on the basis of in-numbers of animals
captured per line per trapping period. In essence, [his corresponds [o number
of individuals captured per 240 trap nights of effort.
• Sampling sites are designated by capital letter on Map M19 and Table E-1
illustrates small mammal [rapping results.
E-19
