-8- //
• Shrub establishment is also very important. VIt is recommended
[hat shrub transplanting by loader be considered as an integral part
of spoils reclamation. Until further information is available, this
may be the only reliable means. Literature review and research should
be instituted as soon as possible. This also will help the browse
improvement studies. Background information is sorely needed for these
areas. Browse improvement work should be conducted as it seems feasible
that this will be an important method in removing grazing pressure
from reseeded areas.
The development of watering sites in regraded spoils should be
considered. This could be worked into the regrading and topsoiling
schedule. However, the regulation should be consulted before these
projects begin.
One important fact was not really clarified and management decisions
need to be made. The term "adjacent area" needs to be reviewed and a
• decision made as to how much area Co cover. For small mammals, avifauna,
and herpetofauna the mine area would be sufficient. It is recommended
that sage and sharptail grouse strutting ground surveys be made within
1/2 mile of the mine holdings:} Raptor nesting sites should be within
=~tfiis same limit. Big game; due to its mobility, is a problem. Again,
the mine area is most important area to be considered and movement to
adjacent areas considered.
In general, it is felt that the Trapper [Jildlife Program is
progressing adequately to meet the present and future requirements.
However, it is recommended that the above suggestion be considered
as an integral part of Trapper's [Jildlife Program. That is, raptor
nesting sites, IJildlife monitoring, strutting ground surveys, and
threatened and endangered species tours be made each year. This
information may be helpful in the future.
•
E-14
