2. Field Activities <br />2.1 Groundwater Sampling <br />Field sampling methods and procedures described below include sample collection methods, <br />sample handling procedures, sample chain of custody procedures. <br />Groundwater sampling activities were conducted at the site on April 9, 2004. Groundwater <br />sampling activities included measurement of the depth to groundwater at each of the existing <br />monitoring wells (MW-6, MW-7, MW-9, MW-10, MW-11, and MW-12) with the exception of <br />MW-8, which was not measurable on that date due to adverse weather conditons. Depth to <br />groundwater measurements were also collected at two existing piezometers (P-2 and P-3) and a <br />groundwater sample was collected from MW-10. <br />The depth to groundwater was measured using an electronic water level indicator prior to the <br />monitoring well purging and sampling activities. Prior to the collection of the groundwater <br />sample, monitoring well MW-10 was purged dry using a dedicated Teflon bailer. The unfiltered <br />groundwater sample was placed directly into laboratory-supplied sample bottles, which were <br />subsequently placed into a cooler with ice. <br />The groundwater sample was collected in accordance with the groundwater monitoring protocol <br />(BBL, 2002) and transported to the Severn Trent Laboratories, Ina (STL) facility located in <br />Denver, CO. The groundwater sample was submitted for analysis of metals (arsenic, antimony, <br />barium, beryllium, cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury, nickel, selenium, silver, thallium, <br />aluminum, iron, manganese, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and calcium), alkalinity, pH, <br />specifc conductance, total dissolved solids (TDS), fluoride, chloride, nitrate, nitrate-nitrite, <br />nitrite, hardness (as CaCo3), and sulfate. hr addition, temperature, pH, and specific conductivity <br />of the groundwater sample were measured in the field. <br />2.2 Field Observations <br />Observations of groundwater color, odor, and particulate content were noted in the field notebook <br />for groundwater samples collected from the single monitoring well. The groundwater sample <br />collected at monitoring well MW-10 was clear and had no discernable odor. <br />Using the purging methods described in the previous section, monitoring well MW-10 was <br />purged dry and allowed to recover to pre-purging groundwater levels prior to sampling.
