C ~a~o-oo-~
P~ United States Forest Paonia
~~ ~ Department of Service Ranger District
Agriculture PHONE NO. 970-527-4131
Dear Interested Party,
P.O. Box 1030 J~3
N Rio Grande Ave.
Paonia, CO 81428
!UN 1 1'2003
piuision of Minerals and Geology
File Code: 2$20_4
Date: June 9, 2003
The Grand Mesa-Uncompahgre-Gunnison National Forests (GMUG) has received applications
from Mountain Coal Company to perform a shallow seismic survey itt an area known as Box
Canyon, and to install 5 ground-water monitoring wells at three locations along the Dry Fork of
Minnesota Creek. The proposed activities are shown on the attached maps.
The seismic survey in Box Canyon is proposed for the purpose of obtaining data about geologic
faults thought to be present in the area. The seismic survey would involve accessing the area in
either full-sized vehicles or on ATVs, drilling shallow boreholes and detonating a seismic
charge. Access to the location would be via State Highway 133 and private land. This seismic
exploration is proposed on an existing federal coal lease in an inventoried roadless area. The
proposed projecYis in compliance with the Roadless Area Conservation Rule.
The proposal to install ground-water monitoring wells is for the purpose of obtaining baseline
ground water data in the alluvial deposits adjacent to the Dry Fork of Minnesota Creek, and the
coal seams being mined. The wells would be drilled using a truck mounted drill rig, and would
disturb about 0.5 acres collectively. Access the proposed well locations would be via the
Minnesota Creek road.
The GMUG is inviting your input on these proposals, and is conducting a 30-day public scoping
and comment period. Comments must be received by July 9, 2003, and maybe addressed to
Liane Mattson, Minerals Staff Officer, P.O. Box 1030, Paonia, CO 81428.
Questions may also be directed to Liane at the telephone number listed above.
Sincerely,
~~~ J, ~~
SUSAN J.
