We have considered alternates to provide protection for
waves, etc. We are in the process of negotiating a 5 acre
wetland in the phase 10 mining area with the U.S. Army Corps
of Engineers. This will result in a shallows that will
provide the additional habitat that you mentioned.
In addition, C & M Companies is also committing to creation
of replacement habitat for prairie dogs to help feed the
transient eagle population. I believe this demonstrates
their commitment to preserving wildlife around the mine
area.
Although additional dikes and smaller ponds would be
desirable from a wildlife viewpoint, we believe the mining
plan we have proposed will provide the excellent habitat you
discussed. There is a limited volume of overburden and
topsoil on the property and our reclamation plan must use
only what is available to us onsite. If we have excess
overburden at the end of the mining project, this could be
used to create additional irregularities in the shoreline.
4. We concur with comment no. 4. However, we felt it
appropriate to notify MLRD of alternate plans that may be
necessary for successful mining of the property.
Thank you again for your comments and suggestions. We appreciate
your help on the permit and look forward to working with you at
the MLRD hearing.
Cordially,
Tujtt:le Applegate Rindahl, Inc.
/ ~ ~~ ~~
Mike: Applegate, P.E.
MA/c:r
