The WDEO Guidelines
for topsoil substitutes were used for the parameters of pH, EC, OC, Se and B. The
NMMMD Guidelines for soil substitutes were used for SAR, texture, CaCO3, coarse
fragments, and acid-base potential. The USDA-SCS Guidelines for drastically disturbed
soils were used for AWC. Numerical values of 1, 2 and 3 were assigned to the
suitability classes of suitable, marginal and unsuitable, respectively. Each observation
was then used as a single datum for calculating the overall suitability class for each
parameter. Potential nutrient deficiencies were determined according to the
recommendations in Soltanpour et. al. (1985). NO3-N rankings were determined by
assigning values of 1, 2 and 3 to soils requiring supplemental nitrogen fertilizer at the
rates of 0, 20 and 40 pounds per acre, respectively. P and K suitability values were
determined by assigning values of 1 and 2 to soils requiring 0 and 30 pounds per acre
of supplemental fertilizer. Zn and Fe suitability values were determined by assigning
values of 1, 2 and 3 depending on whether the soils tested adequate, marginal or low,
respectively. The overall suitability average was calculated by averaging the suitability
index for each parameter. Thus, the lower the suitability value the better the overall
quality of that particular parameter.)
37
