GLOSSARY

Barrier pillars--In underground mining, large rectangular blocks of
coal left in place to support the mine roof above surrounding
'mining operations. ,
Extraction panels--In underground mining, the areas of coal removed
betvreen. barrier pillars.
Long;call panels--In underground mining, the areas of coal removed by
long~•rall methods (bet~reen barrier pillars).
~ Rains--In underground mining, the main horizontal access into the
area to be mined, from vrhich additional access routes, or submains,
are driven for access to specific mining sites.
' .Raise entry--In underground mining, a main entry that is driven up
dip, that is, at some angle above the horizontal plane.
Retreat ttining hethods--In underground mining, a technique ~•rhereby
