No additional impacts are anticipated to the eagle nest in the area
or upon wintering bald eagles in the valley. No impacts to endangered
or threatened wildlir`e species are projected.
Aquatic Biology
There vrould be no additional impacts upon aquatic or riparian
habitats, other than the possibility that increased temporary sedimen-
tation could result if a large ston,~ occurred before the crainaae system
was completed for the vent shaft, access road, and refuse disposal area.
Cultural Resources
•
Prior to any surface disturbing activities, an archeological
clearance is required in potential impact areas (as supported by 1G66
Historic Preservation Act as amended, 36 CFR 800, and FE0 11593) to
identify, evaluate and nitigate possible damace to er,istinc cultural
values. Should siies rea,ain undetected by the survey, sui-face dis-
turbance from construction, subsidence, and other mine related activities
could result in the displacement and da~-aoe of cultui"al values. Should
C41I be ar.~arded the lease, i.6 acres ti•:ould be distr.^-bed by ~25 cu° to
the construeion of an access road and vent shaft. Subsidence, as it
could affect 20J acres, couid create surface disturbanczs '+;hich could
displace and destroy cultural resources. The presence of nine-associated
ti•rorkers on the lease area ~,vould expose cultural resources to public
passage, increasing the potential for vandalism and illegal collecting.
Transportation
There r,~ould be no additional transportation impacts ether than
these te~~~porary i~~~pacts due to hawing vent shaft refuse to a refuse
disposal area.
Use of Stevens Gulch road and Highway 133 by mine-related traffic
would be extended fora period of 8 years. Employee traffic is not
expected to increase during that period, but as production increases
from 435,000 tons in 1978 to 700,000 tons per year in 1980 and L 85,
truck traffic would increase from 17,000 truck trips per year to 23,000.
In addition, the proposed action would increase truck traffic along
the Stevens Gulch road temporarily as 45,000 cubic yards of waste is
hawed from the ventilation shaft to the refuse disposal area.
Visual Resources
There would be no additional visual impacts since most of the
necessary facilities are in-place. The vent shaft wo w d not be visible
from major high.,ays near the site and the access road t•rould be extended
from already existing exploratory drilling roads.
•
