-I • • <br />MEMO T0: -2- March 7, 1978 <br />Harris Sherman <br />Exhibit E, page 11, states that after reclamation "the dike, <br />built to protect the mining operation, will no longer protect <br />the area from frequent flood conditions, which are a natural <br />occurrence for this property." The lowering of the area north <br />of the river by 30 feet during mining (see Map Exhibit F) will <br />create a logical new channel for the river during one of these <br />"natural occurrences." Such a change in the stream channel <br />could seriously affect the headgate for the Hyde Canal, located <br />100 feet east of the pit on the north bank of the river, as <br />well as the railroad bridge and embankment. We recommend that <br />an additional study of this problem be conducted by a professional <br />engineer competent in river mechanics to assure that no damage <br />could occur to existing s uctures. <br />. a . ~-~ <br />s A.
