The majority of the alignment will require fill that will become
relatively deep within proposed culvert areas.
.:.
:: `7
'::zr
..
.',.: ~.
..~
=:.-~;
-..,;
:~
Fills: Considering the subsoil conditions established at test hole locations
and on-site soil types which will be used as fill material, embankment slopes
of 2:1 (horizontal to vertical) should be stable and may be easiest to maln-
Lain. Slopes as steep as 1}:1 can be used for maximum fill depths of 30 feet
and crest width of 28 feet provided slope faces are well protected and
maintained. We understand that embankment slopes will be seeded, mulched
and watered. Due to shallow perched water within a majority of fill areas,
some buildup of hydrostatic pressures is expected. This should dissipate,
but observation of the foundation sobs should be made in the deeper fill
areas during construction. The following procedure is recommended for site
preparation and fill placement:
(1) Strip and remove all vegetation, debris, organic topsoils and exces-
sively soft soils from below the embankment area.
(2) Between Stations 0+00 and 22+00, shallow water and soft surface
conditions may exist. Traffic to this area should be limited until
1
a base can be built up. In areas that become unstable, a coarse rock
may be required to build up a working platform. The granular soils
In the cut section ahead would provide the best fill material here.
(3) In sloping areas steeper than 5:1, the ground surface should be benched
to provide a level surface for fill placement.
•
(4) Scarify, moisten and compact the exposed ground surface to a minimum
depth of 1 foot and lateral extent of 5 feet beyond the,-toe of the
slope.
(5) Place required fill In horizontal compacted lifts.
