i
i
Limited parking, mine office, changehouse, mine water and fuel
supply, haulage equipment service stations, mine electrical sub-
station, and the primary crusher dump point will be located on
the portal bench surface. The primary crusher will be placed
in the portal bench fill material.
Entry into the mine from the bench will be through eight 30 foot
x 30 foot adits, five on the east and three on the lest side
of the canyon. These openings will be widened to 50 feet inside
the mine. The adits provide entrance for men and machinery to
the working area, routes for removal of mined shale, and ventilation
air inlet or exhaust. Approximately fifteen ventilation openings,
30 feet square, will be located at various sites onthe Dow West
property.
Mining will proceed by the conventional mining cycle of drilling,
• charging, blasting, wetting of rock piles, loading, hauling,
scaling and roof bolting. All portions of the cycle will be going
• on concurrently in various areas of the mine, except that blasting
will occur during shift changes when personnel will~not be in
the immediate area.
A ventilation system is required to supply an adequate quantity
of outside air and for air circulation throughout underground
I
work areas. In addition, the ventilation system will clear the
mine of blast fumes, dust, and diesel exhaust fumes not removed
by exhaust scrubbers on the mobile mine equipment. Air circula-
tion will be controlled by the use of air curtains, brattices,
overpasses, and auxiliary fans in the mine. Air flies will be
generated by large fans located at the ventilation openings.
Scrubbers will not be used on the ventilation syste~. Additional
underground services will include electric power distribution for
fans, lighting, and other uses; raw and potable water distribution;
a communication system; and an equipment maintenance facility.
~.
D-21
