2
wheatgrass aze recommended, both of which will establish readily and quickly. This temporary
seeding should be done at a rate of 15 total pounds PLS per acre.
It is highly recommended that the applicant coordinate weed treatment plan development and
implementation with Kelly iJhing, Adams County Cooperative Extension (303-637-8100), to
ensure compliance with the Colorado Noxious Weed Act.
Reclamation Re-Vegetation
For those areas to be reclaimed, it is recommended that 12 inches of topsoil be spread in lifts not
to exceed 4 inches and worked into the slopes to ensure good adhesion and to minimize soil
creep. In order to re-establish normal levels of microbial activity in the soil, compost at the rate
of one to two cubic yard per 1000 ftZ should be mixed with the soil. If compost is not applied,
prior to seeding the topsoil should be tested to deteRnine the need for additional fertilizer.
Recommended grass seeding dates are from November 30`° through April 30`h; seeding should
be done in unfrozen soil. A good quality grass seed drill with an agitator, depth bands and press
wheels is recommended.
The following native grass seed mix and application rate is recommended for re-vegetation in the
soil types found in the mine areas. It is based on NRCS "critical azea" seeding rates that aze
double our normal rates. Please note that the Landscape Plan map (sheet 4 of 4) in the
application under planned native grass mix lists lbs (PLS)/aq this column is actually 100%
PLS/ac. The 100% PLS/ac figure should be muhiplied by the corresponding percent mix for the
grass to provide Ibs (PLS)/ac for that grass.
Total LBS of

Common Name 100%
PLS/Acre
% in Mix PLS needed
per acre
Western wheat rass Arriba, Barton 16.0 30 4.8
Switch rass Grenville 4.0 20 0.8
Sand bluestem Elida 16.0 15 2.4
Alkali Sacaton (Salado) 1.5 15 0.3
Blue rams (Hachita, Lovin ton 3.0 10 0.3
Sideoats rams Vau hn, Butte 9.0 10 1.0
Total 100% 9.6
Note: If seed is broadcast, recommended rate should be
doubled.
We recommend mulching re-vegetated areas with clean weed-free straw or native hay. It should
be applied at a rate of 4,000 pounds per acre and crimped into the soil to anchor it. Crimping
should be cross slope or on the contour, if possible. The State of Colorado has a list of certified
weed-free straw available on the intemet or it can be obtained through local county extension
