In August 2001 Seneca drilled a monhoring well (WWCU-24) approximately 1,600 teat down dip from
the proposed Sage Creek/yyolf Creek mining area and collected overburden chip samples Yo further
assess the overburden characteristics in the Sage Creek/V11olf Creek mining area. The'sample intervals
collected represent the Sage Creek overburden, the Wolf Creek overburden, and the Wolt Creek
underburden.
Ahhough Sege Creek/Wolf Creek overburden samples were collected from only one locale near the
proposed Sage Creek/Wolf Creek mining area and do not statistically represent the actual overburden
characteristics of the entire proposed mining area, the analysis results were used in conjunction with
the. overburden assessment at the Yoast Mine to estimate reclamation suitabifny of the Sage
Creek/V11olf Creek overburden matedal.
The Voast Mine Permit, Tab 21, Minesoil Reconstruction, indicated that.....
Excessive ABP /eve/s were identiTed in T8.9 percent of the Wo/f Creek overburden at Site 2313E,
mostly in the 20 fo 35-loot zone above the coal seam. Typical overburden handling wi/! effective/y
bury much of this streta in the centre/ portion of the apoi/ proTi/e. However, based upon previous
information from the adjacent Seneca // Mine, ecid mine apoi/ may occasionally be identified et the
surlace of Tina/ graded spoil. These areas, ideniiSed by the regraded spot/ monitodng program, wi// be
buried with a minimum of three feet o/ suirab/e apoi/ pdor to sot/rep/acement.
!t has been assumed that similar ABP characteristics are also present at the II-W Sege Creek/Wolf Creek
mining area, although the recent overburden analyses from monitoring well WWCU-24 do not indicate
this potential. Table 6-5.i, Sage Creek/Woif Creek Suitabilty Assessment, presents the average
suitability characteristics from borehole WWCU-24 recently drilled as adown-gradient monhodng well
for the proposed mining area, while Table 6-5.2, Unsuitable Intervals, shows specific depth intervals
that indicate unsuitable zones. It should be noted that spoil handling practices will dilute these
concentrations over a much larger interval and resuh in charactedstics similar to Table 5.5.1. SCC
proposes to employ the same overburden handling practices as approved for the Yoast Wolf Creek
mining area.
6-5-8 Revised 01/02
