onsu
Geotechnical I Environmental Engineering • Ma[erlals
March 9, 2000
Twenrymile Coal Company
29515 RCR N27
Oak Creek, CO 80467
Attn: Mr. Rick Mills
Job Number 99-4004
Subject: Roadway Evaluations, Foidel
Creek Mine Haul/Access Roads, Routt
County, Colorado.
Gentlemen:
This report presents the results of a roadway evaluation for three roadways located at the Foidel Creek
Mine properly in Routt County, Colorado. More specifically, the roadways include the Eaztem
Extension of Haul Road B; the West Refuse Pile Haul Road; and the Fish Creek Borehole Access Road.
• Afield exploration program was conducted to obtain information on the existing gravel pavement
sections and [he subsurface conditions. Material samples obtained during the subsurface investigation
were tested in the laboratory [o provide data on the classification and engineering characteristics of the
road baze gravels and the subgrade soils. The resulu of the field and laboratory investigations are
presented herein.
This report has been prepared to summarize the data obtained and to present our conclusions and
recommendations, based on the existing conditions encountered and the azsumed traffic loadings. A
discussion of geotechnical engineering considerations related to improvement of [he existing roadways in
the selected areas are also included.
Proposed Construction: We understand that this project will consist of the improvement of the gravel
sections for the existing roadways and the construction of a new gravel section for the haul road situated
at the west edge of the Refuse Pile. The existing roadways, which will be improved include the eaztem
extension of Haul Road B and the Fish Creek Borehole Access Road. All of the subject roadways will be
gravel surfaced. It is our understanding that the haul roads will be subjected to a mixture of automobile
and off road haul trucks and earth moving equipment. The access roads will generally be limited to
pickup traffic and occasional delivery trucks or constmctiop vehicles.
Site Conditions: At the time of this investigation, the subject roadways were surfaced with highly
variable ampunts of granular road base. The roadway surfaces generally appeared to be in poor to good
condition and the majority of the roadway subgrade materials appeared stable at the time this report was
prepared. The existing roadways generally had been constructed with drainage borrow ditches along
(970) 879-7888 • Fax (970) 879.7891
2063 Snow Bowl Plaza, P.O.
