Mountain Coal Company CO - 0038776 SCG Project No.: 304204
Site: West Elk Mine
DISCUSSION
The sample collection showed the effects of toxicity to Daphnia magna in both the
treated and untreated effluent samples. The discharge fails WET (whole effluent toxicity) test
guidelines for this sampling period.
The treated effluent samples produced slightly greater toxicity than that seen in the
untreated sample. If another toxicant had been present the opposite would have been expected
(i.e. greater toxicity in the untreated sample). The results appear to confirm that TDS (mainly in
the form of high alkalinity) continues to be the only source of toxicity in the sample.
REFERENCES
1. Hach Chemical Company. 2002.
