.. ~.

The following information pertaining to wildlife is provided for use by
the land Reclamation Board in their consideration of a mining permit
for Cotter Corporation
JD-7 Mine
The Colorad^ Division of Wildlife does hereby find, t^ the best of our
knowledge, that the impact ^f the proposed mining operation on wildlife
will be
minor
moderate
X major
Kline Location: T 46 N, R 17 W, Sections 8, 9, 16, 17, and 21
Wildlife Species List: (may be attached) The key specie impacted will be deer.
Elk, mountain lion, coyotes, bobcats, cottontail rabbits, raptors, small mammals,
reptiles, and numerous birds inhabit the area (See Cotter's Wildlife Species List)
endangered Species impaci.ed: Northern bald eagle
Rssessment of Impact on Wildlife: The major impact to wildlife will be from
habitat removal and from the activity associated with mining. Sagebrush parks,
hillsides with significant browse in conjunction with pinyon-juniper make ideal
habitat for deer and elk, which will be removed due to the type of mining opration.
This area is not critical winter range but due to the previous and existing mining
operations on the area, there will be major impacts on wildlife
Mine Reclamation Recommendations: (may be attached) I concur with Cotter's recta=
mation plans for the JD-7 Mine. Reseeding with native grasses provides early spring
food for deer and small mammals. Any water impoundments constructed will benefit the
area greatly for wildlife. Pinyon-juniper removed should be piled for use by small
mammals, birds, and reptiles. The closure of all unused roads is recommended. Person-
nel considerations should be applied by Cotter Corporation to prevent harassment and
poaching of wildlife by employees.
- Prepared by
Ronald B.
