All production samples were returned to the lab for drying and weighing. Drying occurred at lOSo C •
until a stable weight was achieved (24 hours). Samples were weighed to the nearest 0.1 gram.
2.5 Rare and Endangered Plant Species
A list of eight rare and endangered plant species that are known to occur within athirty-mile radius
of the study area was developed from the Colorado Natural Heritage Program's System for Conservation
Planning website (www.ndis.nrel.wlostate.edu/escoo/). Information regarding habitat requiremer~ and
level of slate and federal protection was also acquired for each species from standard information
databases or published sources. Based on a review of these known distributions, previous studies in the
area, and required habitat requisites for the eight target flora, it was determined that only three of these
taxa had at least modest potential for occurrence within the study area (Grsium perplexans, Penstemon
retrorsus, and Penstemon mensarum). The entire list of eight taxa are as follows:
Sensitive Plant Species Potentialry lkwring in tfie Study Area
Common Name StaGis
Habit
t
a
Scientific Na Federal State
Abode beardstongue Mancos Shale -barren, moist soils - in drainages or Rare or
north-faring slopes - saltbrush/sagebrush community - none Threatened
Penstemon re6» 5000' to 6 500' elevation
Arizona centaury Associated with wetland /riparian habitats
none
Critically Imperiled
Cer~urium arizoni
Colorado desert-parsley I•lan~s FormaUOn -Abode Hills - assodated with
sagebrush, shadsmle, greasewood and shrub oak - none Imperiled
Lomatium condnnu 5500' to 7000' elevation
Eastwood evening-primrose Abode Hills in bwer valleys
none
Critically Imperil
Camissonia eastwoodia
Grand Mesa penstemon Mourrbin slopes on brand Mesa Rare or
Penstemon mensaru none Threatened
Helleborine Seeps in sandstone dills and hillsides - hot firings -
4 800' to 6,000' elevation
' Sensitive Imperiled
i dis i ante
Thistle Adobe hills
none Imperiled
Grsium lexan
Uinta Basin hookless radus Rodry hills -mesa slopes -alluvial benches -desert Rare or
Sderoradus laucu shrub communities - 4,500' to 6,000' elevation Threaten Threatened
Prior to implementation of field work, taxonomic desQiptions and botanical drawings of all eight
target spades, with special emphasis on the three primary spaces, were nrefully reviewed and

wmmitted to memory. In this manner a definitive search image was attained and the unique
characteristics fadlitating field identification of suspect plants was fadlitated.
